YouTube, language learning and teaching techniques

This is a very detailed article about the benefits of using Youtube as a language teaching tool. The article looks at the concepts of authenticity and student motivation and how they may be enhanced by using YouTube as supplementary material in an EFL classroom. Finally, it even provides a lesson plan for a "Youtube lesson". :)

Language teaching through Youtube

I've found teachers channel on Youtube, where on the opening page they present 10 ideas about how teachers can use Youtube in the classroom.

Accent Tag

Concerning the disadvantages that youtube can have when introduced to learners of the English language is that you can find videos with almost all the existing dialects and accents of English on youtube.
If somebody listens to the different dialects simultaneously, they can end up using words that are different in the two variants interchangably. Thus, they can have difficulties when trying to acquire a given dialect, one that is spoken in the country they want to stay in. For instance, take someone who has been listening to British speakers on youtube, and then moves to America. It will be of no use to them that they have learnt from a youtube video that what you cover your scars with is a "plaster"; they will bleed to death unless they know that what they need is a "band-aid" in American.
Similarly, learners of English may encounter problems when applying an accent that they acquired through watching videos. Some accents of English are seen as subordinate or is spoken by uneducated people. If somebody wathes videos of his favourite musician being interviewed for hours a day, it is inevitable that he acquires the accent of that speaker. Suppose this accent is Cockney. Will this learner have difficulty communicating in other social classes later on? Can second language learners switch from one accent to the other as some native speakers do?

After having the problems stated, here is something that I found on youtube. This series of videos is called the "Accent Tag". Basically, it is a youtube community organisation that urges youtubers to record themselves pronouncing some words that are typically different in pronunciation in the different dialects of English. They also have to answer some questions, the answers to which highlight lexical differences. So, for instance to the question "What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?" an Australian would answer "soft drink", whereas in England it is called "fizzy drink".
These videos are really fun to watch. I'll just put an Australian example here:

Ausztrál Tom

Here's Ausztrál Tom, the youtuber Nora suggested us to check out, and I can tell you, it was really worth every minute! :-)
Ausztrál Tom is a university student from Australia who learned to speak Hungarian all by himself and after he's mastered our language, started posting videos in which he teaches us Australian words, expressions and sayings.
His videos are really funny, there are altogether 15 of them so if you can't stop clicking for the next episode, you'll only need c. 1 hour to watch the whole thing. :-)
Here you go:

Our questions so far

Hi! :-)

Last lesson we agreed that one aspect of language learning through youtube that we could investigate is how we could categirise the possibilities that lie in youtube as a language learning device. The categories we already came up with are: watching, subtitling, tagging, annotating.

Another possible and interesting topic worth researching would be; what disadvantages can youtube have on the language learning process. One such disadvantage could be listening to different dialects and acquiring an inappropriate accent for the purpose of one's later language use.

The third option could be looking at the musical side of youtube and the motivation of learning that comes with watching music videos or lyrics videos.

Please comment on this post if you have anything to add or want to modify something. I think it's high time we finalised our topic. :-)
